The author of the scripts site you mentioned, here. I'm actually surprised to hear that a public school is using a script from the site. Usually churches are the ones using them. What with the laws against anything remotely hinting at Christianity in school, I wouldn't be surprised if someone complained about it.

Sorry you find the script to be so horrible! I wonder if the fact that it has a message that hearkens back to the true meaning of Christmas that makes it so offensive? Or is it just bad all around? At least I didn't subject the reader and viewers of the skit with a preachy "here's how to get saved, you sinner" message: it just leads up to it. Be glad for small favors! :)

Hmmm... I wonder how you can help out in it if you feel it is so bad. My conscience would prevent me if I were in your place. "Just Say No" might hold true in this case. Be true to your convictions, I say!

Anyway, everyone has a right to an opinion, especially on the web, but that doesn't extend to using copyrighted graphics. Here's the fine print at the bottom of each page:

"All text, scripts, graphics, logos, artwork, etc. on this site are copyrighted by Fred Passmore. The scripts may be downloaded for your use (see the terms at the bottom of each script) but no other use of any site elements is lawful unless permission is given."

I do that to protect the original artwork (such as it is, being Christian and all) from getting separated from the site. If you remove that from your post, we got no problem. I'm sure you understand and won't hold it against me.

I hope that if the script is used after all, that it turns out better than you are afraid it might!

I've taken the little devil down from my site. I certainly didn't mean to infringe on your intellectual property, but you have to admit, that little guy is pretty funny. I suspect that's why he's on your site in the first place.

In your post you raise a couple of concerns, which I'd like to respond to. The first is that I think your skit is "horrible." No way! I have nothing against your skit in any way. Some of it is pretty funny and I think it accomplishes exactly what it sets out to, (although not one of the kids we auditioned understood that the "Train Man" is supposed to sound like a train. That's what you get for working with 12 year olds.) I offer my fullest apologies for any offense I may have given.

I do, however, object to the forum in which this play is being presented. I teach in a public school and don't think that it's appropriate for the school to sponsor an event which proscribes a specific Christian theology.

Regarding "the laws against anything remotely hinting at Christianity in school," I can't imagine that you think this play "hints" at Christianity. I'm also sure it comes as no shock to you that not everyone in the school is Christian. It's not the teachers' (or government's) job to change that. Public schools are not in the business of separating the "saved" from the "damned" nor the sheep from the goats. I'm not going to tell my non-Christian kids that their traditions aren't as good as mine or yours. Their parents pay taxes and help with the Book Fair and I see no reason why I should be expected to work at cross purposes to the very fine traditions they are being taught at home. Moreover, in my school specifically, those laws are taken as suggestion more than statute, so complaints about the lack of religion in my county at least are unfounded.

So why don't I complain and get the whole thing canceled? I plan to. Right after I steal all the decorations down in Whoville and tell my assistant, Bob Cratchit, that he has to work on Christmas. C'mon. I also helped to run auditions because my friend and fellow teacher had put a lot of work into it and I don't see much value in leaving him hanging in the wind. I may not want too much religion in my schools, but I do try not to be a total jerk about it. No, I won't be helping out again, but in this case I think it would be more productive for me to make sure all the kids get a good grounding in the basics of Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism than to ruin the good working relationship I have with the other teachers at my school. I intend to hold onto my convictions, but I've no reason to be foolish about how I go about doing so.

Public schools are public space and our celebration should be one of our shared values. I haven't met a Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Baha'i, Buddhist, Taoist, atheist, or secular humanist yet who disapproved of generosity, kindness, forgiveness, or love. If my kids have Jesus, or Yahweh, or Allah, or just plain old good values in their hearts, I'm making it clear that they should be proud of that and in the eyes of their school, all are equal and equally welcome.

And of course you can wish me a Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas to you as well!
