KiteFest

KiteFest.jpgFor those of you who don't (yet) live in the Washington, DC metro area, this weekend was the 41st Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival, and it was sweet. I think that the number of kites in the sky can safely be called "thousands" which is, as you may be able to guess, a sight to behold. It's a unique benefit of living in a city that people are willing, occasionally, to get their schedules aligned and do together what they could just as easily do separately. The effect is especially potent when they're willing to go somewhere so full of portent (like the national mall) and then do something so deliberately whimsical (like fly a kite.)

I didn't have my own kite to fly -- a situation which will be remedied soon enough -- but my friend and co-worker Josh had one that he was willing to share. We weren't very successful at getting it to, you know, fly, but we did manage to hit someone in the head with it. Hard.

I took a bunch of pictures, which you can find here.
