Break out the trench coats and misogny
Egad! Maltese Falcon totally stolen! It is impossible to contemplate this set of events without absolutely glowing. This is a falcon in pursuit of which Bogart got punched in the neck by a cop and went right on talking. I hope they find it… in Istanbul. In the possession of the fat man, immediately following a mysterious harbor fire. Via BoingBoing.

Intermission

Sorry about the delay here folks… maybe go and get a snack or something, ’cause it might be awhile. It turns out California has this exam you have to take to be a lawyer and hooo! is it hard. I think I should take some time thinking this over.
Quick hits, if you require them:
- Graduated from Stanford Law School
- Purchased and watched Top Secret!
- Have been playing Katamari Damacy like it was 2004. We even got the soundtrack, Katamari Fortissimo Damacy
- Apparently Bruce graduated from Bowdoin
- Suryo came to visit
- Have now watched all of “Lost”; thinking of moving on to “Deadwood”, “Buffy”, or maybe “Six Feet Under”.
Okay, seriously I have to go work now.

Quick hits: Last lap
One would think that by the time you’re a 3L you pretty much sail through exams. It’s not as true as it ought to be. My Pollution exam is done, Ethics is tomorrow, and International IP is Tuesday. And then I will be done. Maybe I will get back to posting and pickin’, both of which have been neglected as of late.
The quick hits are as follows:
- I ordered the new Achewood book but received Nice Pete’s inscrutable work instead. This will have to be resolved.
- We have almost finished reading Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass, first book in the His Dark Materials series. Sonya and O.J. lent it to us. I say it is quite good.
- I submitted my e-waste paper for consideration in an SLS environmental writing competition, but had to submit a version that didn’t reflect any edits made by ELJ.
- Am hooked on “Reno 911!” I hear there’s a movie coming out.
That’s it for quick hits today.

Quick Hits: Banjo, OOTS, Sports cars
Want to know what’s up? Here’s what’s up.
- I keep on pickin’ that banjo. Can more or less play four songs now, slowly and with many errors. This weekend I plan to plug in my MiniDisc and see what I sound like.
- Need a webcomic? Rich Burlew’s Order of the Stick is plain nice. It’s stick-figure art, and the humor, nay the premise, revolves around old-school D&D, but Burlew has a knack for feather-light storytelling that keeps one coming back.
- Speaking of webcomics, Achewood Vol. VI is out, and a new character, Emeril, is breaking onto the scene.
- Saw the Dale Ann Bradley band at RBA on Saturday. They covered both “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “Me and Bobby McGee,” which was questionable. Their picker, Elmer Burchett, Jr., was what we call fast and cuts a somewhat more Hip (sparkly tunic, goatee) profile than the banjo normally connotes. Also performing were the School of Bluegrass, none of whom were over sixteen and several of whom were under ten. Molly Tuttle, guitar player, is thirteen and unbelievable. Frankie Nagle also made an appearance. This is probably the new generation of bluegrass, or at least West Coast bluegrass. Does that exist? These kids are incredible.
- Almost done with season one of “Lost.”
- C is in D.C. next week, call her if you want to see her.
In closing I will say only that on the What sports car are you? test I got a score of “Mazda RX-8.”

Quick Hits: At the airport
Emily’s flight is delayed, so this one’s a quick hit from the $1/minute airport Internet kiosk. 4m30s left… go!
- MPRE… passed!
- Current listening habits include Major League Baseball (go A’s, I guess) and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien.
- Rug Doctor is awesome and is highly recommended to all
- Banjo pickin’ coming along nicely. Have almost finished learning the song Mountain Dew (not related to the soda).
- Fish sent me a copy of the book How to Work a Room. I appreciate the thought but it sends a sightly odd message
One minute left! Got to preview and post! Sayonara.

Quick Hits: Technical difficulties
Not much to tell right now… the only real news is that my hard drive mushroom-clouded. I have some backups, so I should be back in action soon, but I did lose the photos and other things accumulated over spring break, and a few days’ worth of class notes. If you’re reading this, go and back up your computer.

Quick hits P.S.: Achewood
I can never post a “Quick Hits” entry without forgetting one thing. Have you been reading Achewood? If you don’t know about the Great Outdoor Fight you don’t know about one of the best comics of the day.

Quick Hits: Funky beats, e-waste, parricide, and comments
Don’t, don’t, don’t let’s start.
- Finishing my moral character determination application. A little late on this one, hopefully not a problem.
- Are you on the east coast? If so I will absolutely see you next week. You won’t know when. Or where. Maybe while you’re sleeping. Or brushing your teeth.
- Finally saw Brokeback. Joy and pain in the American west.
- I have embarked on a steady musical diet of East Coast hip-hop and They Might Be Giants.
- There’s a rumor that the CD mix club is going to restart. I hear C has a new mix looking for an audience.
- Spent the whole weekend editing my e-waste note. Slouching toward publication.
- Finished Brothers Karamazov. A book review would be fun but quite an undertaking.
- At Bruce’s insistence, comments are now active, with aggressive junk filtering. If there’s any monkey business though I swear I’ll turn this car around.

Quick hits: MPRE, “Lost,” Gale Norton

Listening to Madhavi Sunder right now. In brief:
- MPRE: Ding, dong, done.
- Lingering several years behind the curve, O.J. and I have started watching “Lost” on Netflix. Now I must begin insulating myself from any knowledge of the show’s later seasons until I’m caught up. Under no circumstances speak to me about “Lost.”
- Interior Secretary Norton resigned. Shortly before, the parties in Cobell v. Norton essentially asked Congress to just pick a number and legislatively settle this thing. Hopefully we have seen the last Interior secretary held in contempt over Cobell.
- Buffalo is in the news again with Eliot Spitzer’s anti-payola probe involving WKSE’s parent company Entercom. WKSE was a terrible radio station when I was in high school. There, I said it. I’d say it again.
- As of now, I’m updating this blog using Kula Co.’s ecto. Give it a shot, there are Mac and Windows clients.

Like a wolf among lambs
Do you like Drew? Do you hate spam? Now you can enjoy one without the other! Seriously, it took like three hours but I think I cleared out the thousands of poor-taste messages that were strangling courtney5. Now I need to take a shower.
P.S. He still hasn’t updated. Don’t get excited.

Quick Hits P.S.: It’s California
![]()
Forgot to mention this below, but it’s official: I’m going to stick around for June and July to study for and take the California bar before heading back to D.C. Huzzah!

Quick Hits: Katrina, D.C., BeatnikPad
What’s been going on? What hasn’t!
- Met up with Davis and Lauren for dinner at the Old Pro. When we leave here, I’ll miss that place—but I won’t have to miss Davis & Lauren who are moving to D.C.! Davis has accepted a job at DOJ’s environmental division.
- Attended Assessing Katrina: Rebuild or Abandon? with C and Sue last night. Buzz Thompson chaired a panel discussion among a disaster response planner, a civil engineer, and a sociologist on how to assess rebuilding in the Gulf Coast. The thing they all seemed to agree on was the very hardest to achieve: ensuring that the residents of destroyed areas feel included in the policy decisions about what to do next. More on this later.
- The Olympics ended. My feelings of sportsmanship and fair play went back into hibernation.
- Hail BeatnikPad, and its G4- and G5-optimized versions of Firefox. Suggestion: If you go this route, try building a new Firefox profile (i.e., delete or rename ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/profiles.ini) after you’ve installed the recompiled version.
- Dan W. emailed out a list of MySpace pages from OPHS alums. Surreal.
Out.
